Do You Have Olympics Size Goals For Your Future?

As much of the world is gripped in Olympics fever, let’s take a moment to think about what it takes to attain such results.  It starts by setting goals.

Do you have a 10-year goal?  A life goal?  Do you have goals set for your personal life in addition to your professional?  Too often we focus on daily, weekly and annual goals, but it’s important to look further on the horizon.

Ten years are a long time. In our fast paced, technology-driven life, your world may be almost unrecognizable in a decade.  Rather than waiting on the world to come to us, we need to plan for this uncertain future. One thing about a ten-year time frame is the ability to master an area of our lives.  We can master the craft. The same goes for our careers, our family life, or building a business.Olympics goals

Malcolm Gladwell in Outliers shares that mastering a talent takes, on average, 10,000 hours. Assuming a 40-hour work week, it’ll take about 4.8 years of dedicated practice.  Ten years then, it would seem, would give us plenty of time to become proficient in at least one (if not 2!) profession, hobby or other worthwhile venture.
